A Brief History
MMTA Workers' Comp. Trust (the Trust) was formed in 1991 due to the increasing
cost and unavailability of workers' compensation insurance in Maine at the time.
Members of the MMTA decided to take control of their WC insurance destinies and
formed a group self-insurance program tailored to be cost-effective and business
friendly. Since 1991, The Trust has grown from 15 members to a healthy 75
members, all of which are committed to safety and claims handling programs. Due
to this commitment, members have received refunds totaling more than $16 million
and rate reductions to the tune of 50% on average for years 1991 to 1998. An
important Trust goal has always been to provide the membership with the best
service possible which is evidenced by the in-house staff that is always
available to help both members and injured employees.
